Dresdner Kulturmagazin Review of Lost Weekend

Memphis legend Jack Oblivian (Oblivians, Compulsive Gamblers, Tennessee Tearjerkers) released a limited tape a few years ago on his own label "Mony Records", which included mostly outtakes and demos, almost always self-directed in the ever-receptive Music room of his apartment were taken. As you know, Jack O is multi-instrumental and always gives his taste for blues, soul, punk rock, pop, country, psychedelic sci-fi and garage free rein. The tape was so well received in the scene that quite a few asked to please make these songs appear on vinyl records as well. This has happened twice now. For one thing, there is the current version with yellow front cover on the still quite new »Label Black & Wyatt Records "and a European version with a black cover and another song (" Funky Blue "instead of" Guido goes to Memphis ") on the labels" Ghost Highway Records "(Spain) and" Beluga Records "(Sweden). Each of the 16 tracks is not about any badly overdriven sketches, but about elaborate songs, which were recorded with a few exceptions, all in detail and very entertaining by home recording. And since Jack Oblivian is so versatile and oriented, the LP sounds almost like a sampler "Memphis Music." In addition to new songs, there are also versions of already released songs. For example, "Dream Killer", which sounds like a low-fiv no-wave punk song, was re-recorded along with the rest of the Oblivians and released as "Run for Cover" on their comeback album "Desperation." "Girl on the Beach", his summer hit from the "Rat City" album, is here in a squeaky sweet 4-track version that puts a grin on your face. »Lost Weekend« is a versatile and humorous album to listen to and rediscover. Memphis is still burning!
